forces to create an explosive yet soulful musical duo. Some of the
names on Fred's music resume include The Tony Rice Unit, Emmylou Harris
& the Hot Band, Suzy Bogguss, and Kathy Mattea, while Tim has
shared the stage with names like Patty Loveless, John Cowan, and a host
of other bluegrass artists. Fred Carpenter and Tim May taped a live
concert at The Violin Shop in March 2009. Here's some clips.
Tim May
is an avid collector of fine vintage instruments, mainly Gibsons used
in the ‘teens. Tim’s personal collection is all red sunburst models,
all in original condition. Tim and coconspirator David
Harvey created a presentation that would give a brief
history about the unique features of each individual piece and
demonstrate the beauty of the instruments in their respective
collections.
Master Luthier David Harvey currently oversees Gibson’s mandolin production and is a collector himself. David produced the acclaimed Moody Bluegrass CD and is now in the studio producing Moody Bluegrass II. He performed on Larry Cordle’s Grammy-winning Murder on Music Row, which also became IBMA’s Song of the Year 2000. Harvey also played on Livin’, Lovin’, Losin’: Songs of the Louvin Brothers which won a Grammy in 2005.
The
presentation was given twice in Nashville at the Gibson
Showcase for guests of the Gibson Guitar
Corp. A third presentation took place at the
Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on June 27, 2007,
and was taped before a live audience. The hour-long film was been
broken down into nine chapters, which are available for viewing on YouTube.
Songs on the videos include Cedar Hill (Chapter 1) and Eat My Dust (Chapter 9), used with special permission from David Grisman, Never on Sunday, Sweet Sue, Django Reinhardt's Nuages, Whiskey Before Breakfast, Angeline the Baker and Sweet Hour of Prayer. The tune The Late Waltz was written by David Harvey. All are preceeded by information about the vintage instruments used in the performance.
Come catch Tim and David in RADIOLA to catch a live performance of many of the tunes on the video -- and more like them.
